How Samsung Galaxy Firmware Updates Work
An explanation of how Samsung delivers firmware updates to Galaxy devices, from staged OTA rollouts to Smart Switch and the role of CSC codes.
The firmware update process
When Samsung releases a firmware update, it does not reach all eligible devices at once. Instead, the update is rolled out in stages — a process designed to manage server load, catch issues early, and accommodate carrier testing requirements.
Staged OTA rollouts
Over-the-air (OTA) updates are the primary delivery method for Samsung firmware. When a new firmware version is released, Samsung pushes it to devices in waves:
- Initial wave: A small percentage of eligible devices receive the update first. This allows Samsung to monitor for issues before a broader rollout.
- Expansion: If no significant issues are found, the rollout expands to more devices over days or weeks.
- Full rollout: The update eventually reaches all eligible devices in the target regions.
The rollout is managed by CSC region — not globally. A device on one CSC may receive an update weeks before the same device model on a different CSC.
The role of CSC codes
Your device's CSC (Consumer Software Customisation) code determines which firmware updates it receives and when. Samsung compiles and tests firmware for each CSC independently. This means:
- Open-market (unbranded) CSC codes like XEU or XAA often receive updates first.
- Carrier-specific CSC codes like VOD (Vodafone) or BTU (BT) may receive updates later due to additional carrier testing.
- The same device model in different countries may have different CSC codes and different update schedules.
See our CSC codes guide for more details.
Smart Switch as an alternative
Samsung Smart Switch (for PC and Mac) provides an alternative update channel. By connecting your device to a computer running Smart Switch, you can check for and install firmware updates manually. In some cases, Smart Switch may offer an update before it reaches your device's OTA channel, because Smart Switch can access firmware from a broader set of CSC codes.
What a firmware update contains
A firmware update may include any combination of:
- Security patches: Fixes from the monthly security bulletin.
- One UI updates: New interface features and changes to Samsung's One UI layer.
- Android updates: Major new Android versions or minor platform updates.
- Bug fixes: Fixes for device-specific issues.
- Carrier updates: Changes to carrier-specific apps and configurations.
The build number change tells you what type of update was applied.
Why updates vary by device
Not all Galaxy devices receive the same updates. The update a device receives depends on:
- Device model: Flagship devices like the Galaxy S series receive more frequent updates than budget devices.
- CSC region: Updates are rolled out by region and carrier.
- Age of device: Older devices may have exited the update eligibility window.
- Carrier: Carrier-locked devices may face additional testing delays.

Frequently asked questions
How does Samsung deliver firmware updates?+
Samsung delivers firmware updates over the air (OTA) in staged rollouts by CSC region, and through Samsung Smart Switch for manual updates via a connected computer. OTA is the primary method for most users.
Why hasn't my phone received an update that others have?+
Updates are rolled out in stages by CSC region and carrier. Your device may be on a CSC code that has not yet received the rollout, or the staged rollout may not have reached your device yet. You can check manually in Settings > Software update or via Smart Switch.
Can I get updates faster with Smart Switch?+
Smart Switch can sometimes access updates before they reach your device's OTA channel, because it can check firmware availability across a broader set of CSC codes. Connect your device to a PC or Mac with Smart Switch installed to check.
Do all Galaxy phones get the same updates?+
No. Updates vary by device model, CSC region, carrier, and device age. Flagship devices receive more frequent updates than budget devices, and the same device may receive updates at different times in different regions.
What does a firmware update include?+
A firmware update may include security patches, One UI changes, Android version updates, bug fixes, and carrier-specific changes. The build number change indicates what type of update was applied.
