How to Find Your Samsung Galaxy Model Number

A practical guide to locating your Samsung Galaxy device's model number (SM- code) using Settings, the physical device, or the original packaging.

Why you need your model number

Your Samsung Galaxy model number (beginning with SM-) identifies the specific hardware variant of your device. You need it to find the correct firmware, accessories, and support information. Different regional variants of the same device may have different model numbers — for example, a Snapdragon variant and an Exynos variant of the same phone will have different model numbers.

Method 1: Check in Settings

The easiest way to find your model number is in the device settings:

  1. Open Settings on your Galaxy device.
  2. Scroll to and tap About phone (or About device).
  3. Look for Model number — this will show a string like SM-S928B or SM-A566B.

This is your device's model number. Write it down — you will need it to search for firmware and device information.

Method 2: Check the back of the device

On many Galaxy devices, the model number is printed on the back:

  1. Turn off your device and remove the case if applicable.
  2. Look at the back of the device — the model number may be printed in small text near the bottom.
  3. On devices with a glass back, the text may be very small and hard to read. Use a magnifying glass if needed.

Note that some recent Galaxy devices do not print the model number on the back. In that case, use the Settings method.

Method 3: Check the original packaging

If you still have the original box your device came in:

  1. Look for a label on the bottom or side of the box.
  2. The label will list the model number along with the serial number (S/N), IMEI, and other regulatory information.
  3. The model number will be in the format SM-XXXX.

Method 4: Check the purchase receipt

Your purchase receipt or order confirmation should also list the model number. This is useful if you no longer have the device's packaging.

Understanding model number variants

The same device may be sold under different model numbers in different regions. For example:

  • The Galaxy S26 Ultra may be SM-S928B in international markets and a different model number in North America.
  • These variants may have different chipsets (Exynos vs Snapdragon) and different connectivity bands.

When looking up firmware, always use the model number that matches your specific device. Using firmware from a different model number can cause serious problems.

Model number vs build number

  • Model number (SM-XXXX): Identifies your hardware variant. This stays the same for the life of the device.
  • Build number: Identifies the specific firmware version currently installed. This changes with each firmware update.

You need the model number to find the correct firmware for your device. See our model numbers reference for more details.
