Samsung OTA Updates Explained
A guide to Samsung's over-the-air (OTA) update system: how updates are pushed, staged rollouts, manual checks, and how OTA compares to Smart Switch.
What are OTA updates?
OTA stands for Over-the-Air. It refers to firmware updates that are delivered wirelessly to your Samsung Galaxy device, without the need for a computer or USB cable. OTA is the primary method Samsung uses to deliver firmware updates to Galaxy devices.
When Samsung releases a new firmware version, it is pushed to eligible devices via OTA. Your device checks for updates automatically on a regular schedule, and you can also check manually at any time.
How OTA updates work
The OTA update process works as follows:
- Samsung releases firmware: A new firmware version is compiled and tested for specific device models and CSC regions.
- Staged rollout begins: The update is pushed to a small percentage of eligible devices first.
- Your device checks for updates: Your device periodically contacts Samsung's servers to check for available updates.
- Update notification: If an update is available, you receive a notification.
- Download and install: You download the update over Wi-Fi and install it on your device.
The entire process is wireless — no computer is needed.
Staged OTA rollouts
Samsung does not push OTA updates to all eligible devices simultaneously. Instead, updates are rolled out in stages:
- Wave 1: A small percentage of devices receive the update first. This allows Samsung to monitor for issues.
- Wave 2 and beyond: If no issues are found, the rollout expands to more devices over days or weeks.
- Full rollout: Eventually, all eligible devices in the target CSC regions receive the update.
This staged approach means that even if an update has been released, it may not appear on your device immediately. See our guide on why your update may not be showing for more.
How to manually check for OTA updates
To manually check for OTA updates:
- Open Settings on your Galaxy device.
- Go to Software update.
- Tap Download and install.
- Your device will contact Samsung's servers and check for available updates.
- If an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it.
You can also enable Auto download over Wi-Fi to have your device automatically download updates when connected to Wi-Fi.
OTA vs Smart Switch
There are two ways to receive Samsung firmware updates:
- Delivery: OTA is wireless; Smart Switch uses a USB cable to a PC or Mac.
- Internet: OTA uses Wi-Fi or mobile data; Smart Switch uses the computer's internet connection.
- Availability: OTA is limited by CSC region; Smart Switch can access broader CSC codes.
- Manual check: OTA is checked in Settings > Software update; Smart Switch is checked in the Smart Switch app.
- Storage: OTA stores the update on the device; Smart Switch stores it on the computer.
Smart Switch can sometimes access updates before they reach your device's OTA channel, because it can check firmware availability across a broader set of CSC codes. If an OTA update is not appearing, try Smart Switch.
What OTA updates include
An OTA update may include any combination of:
- Security patches: Monthly or quarterly security updates.
- One UI updates: New One UI features and interface changes.
- Android updates: Major new Android versions.
- Bug fixes: Fixes for device-specific issues.
- Carrier updates: Changes to carrier-specific apps and configurations.
The build number change tells you what type of update was applied.
OTA update requirements
To receive an OTA update, your device needs:
- Sufficient storage: Free space for the update download and installation.
- Battery charge: At least 50% battery (or connected to a charger).
- Wi-Fi connection: OTA updates typically require Wi-Fi for large downloads.
- Eligible CSC code: Your device's CSC region must be included in the rollout.
- Unmodified firmware: Rooted or modified devices may not receive official OTA updates.
OTA update safety
OTA updates are designed to be safe and reliable. Samsung digitally signs all firmware updates, and your device verifies the signature before installation. This prevents unauthorised or modified firmware from being installed via OTA.
If an OTA update fails to install, your device will typically roll back to the previous firmware version automatically. You can then try again or use Smart Switch as an alternative.
SamsungFirmware.com and OTA updates
Our firmware ledger tracks firmware releases that are delivered via OTA. Each record includes the build number, Android version, One UI version, security patch level, and release date. Records are labelled Verified, Reported, or Expected so you can assess their reliability.
Frequently asked questions
What is an OTA update on Samsung?+
OTA (over-the-air) updates are firmware updates delivered wirelessly to your Samsung Galaxy device, without the need for a computer. OTA is the primary method Samsung uses to deliver firmware updates.
How do I check for OTA updates on my Samsung phone?+
Go to Settings > Software update > Download and install on your Galaxy device. Your device will contact Samsung's servers and check for available updates. If an update is available, follow the prompts to download and install it.
Why hasn't my OTA update arrived yet?+
OTA updates are rolled out in stages by CSC region. Your device may not have been reached by the staged rollout yet, or your CSC region may not be included in the current wave. Check manually in Settings > Software update or try Samsung Smart Switch.
Is OTA better than Smart Switch for updates?+
OTA is more convenient because it is wireless, but Smart Switch can sometimes access updates before they reach your OTA channel. Both deliver the same firmware. If an OTA update is not appearing, try Smart Switch as an alternative.
Do OTA updates require Wi-Fi?+
Large OTA updates typically require a Wi-Fi connection to download. You can check for updates over mobile data, but the download will usually require Wi-Fi. Samsung Smart Switch provides an alternative that does not require Wi-Fi on the device.
