What Is a Samsung Security Patch?

A guide to Samsung security patches: what they are, what vulnerabilities they fix, how patch levels work, and why they matter for your Galaxy device.

What is a security patch?

A Samsung security patch is a firmware update that addresses known security vulnerabilities in your Galaxy device. Security patches are released regularly — monthly for flagship devices, quarterly for many mid-range devices — and are identified by a security patch level date.

Security patches are one of the most important types of firmware updates. They protect your device against known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malicious actors.

What security patches fix

Samsung security patches address two categories of vulnerabilities:

Android (Google) vulnerabilities

These are fixes from Google's Android Security Bulletin, covering vulnerabilities in the Android operating system framework. Google publishes a monthly bulletin listing vulnerabilities that affect all Android devices, and Samsung incorporates these fixes into its security patches.

Samsung-specific vulnerabilities

These are fixes from Samsung's own Mobile Security Bulletin, covering vulnerabilities in Samsung-specific components:

  • Samsung Knox: Samsung's enterprise security platform.
  • Exynos: Samsung's chipset platform (where applicable).
  • Samsung apps: Vulnerabilities in Samsung's system applications.
  • Device drivers: Vulnerabilities in hardware driver software.

Both categories are included in each security patch, providing comprehensive protection.

Understanding security patch levels

Each security patch is identified by a security patch level — a date string like 2026-08-01. This date indicates the latest security bulletin your device has applied:

  • A patch level of 2026-08-01 means your device includes all security fixes from the August 2026 Samsung Mobile Security Bulletin and all prior months.
  • A newer patch level generally means better protection against known vulnerabilities.

You can find your current security patch level in Settings > About phone > Software information > Android security patch level.

How security patches are delivered

Security patches are delivered as firmware updates via OTA (over-the-air) and Samsung Smart Switch:

  • OTA: The patch appears in Settings > Software update when it is available for your device and CSC region.
  • Smart Switch: You can check for and install patches via a USB connection to a PC or Mac.

Security patches are typically smaller than major Android updates and install more quickly.

Monthly vs quarterly patches

Samsung categorises devices into different security update frequencies:

  • Monthly: Flagship devices like the Galaxy S series and Galaxy Z series receive monthly patches.
  • Quarterly: Many Galaxy A series devices receive quarterly patches.
  • Biannual: Some older or entry-level devices receive patches twice a year.

The frequency depends on Samsung's security policy for each device model. See our guide on monthly vs quarterly updates for more details.

Why security patches matter

Security patches are critical for protecting your device against:

  • Malware: Software designed to damage or gain unauthorised access to your device.
  • Exploits: Techniques that take advantage of vulnerabilities in software.
  • Data breaches: Unauthorised access to your personal data.
  • Remote code execution: Attacks that allow an attacker to run code on your device.

Installing security patches promptly is one of the most effective ways to keep your device secure.

How to check your security patch level

To check your current security patch level:

  1. Open Settings on your Galaxy device.
  2. Go to About phone > Software information.
  3. Look for Android security patch level — this shows a date (e.g. 2026-08-01).

Compare this date against our security patch tracker to see if a newer patch is available for your device.

How to install security patches

To install a security patch:

  1. Go to Settings > Software update.
  2. Tap Download and install.
  3. If a patch is available, download it over Wi-Fi.
  4. Follow the prompts to install the patch.
  5. Your device will restart during installation.

Make sure your device is charged and connected to Wi-Fi before installing.

Samsung security bulletins

Samsung publishes a monthly Mobile Security Bulletin describing the vulnerabilities addressed in each patch. The bulletin is available on Samsung's Mobile Security website. It covers both Google's Android security fixes and Samsung-specific fixes.

The security patch level date in your device's software information corresponds to the bulletin month your device is currently running.

SamsungFirmware.com and security patches

Our security patch tracker catalogues each security patch release with its patch month, Android security patch level date, and Samsung bulletin month. Each record is labelled Verified, Reported, or Expected so you can assess its reliability.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Samsung security patch?+

A security patch is a firmware update that addresses known security vulnerabilities in your Galaxy device. It includes fixes from Google's Android Security Bulletin and Samsung's own Mobile Security Bulletin.

How do I check my Samsung security patch level?+

Go to Settings > About phone > Software information > Android security patch level on your Galaxy device. The date shown there indicates the latest security bulletin your device has applied. Compare it against our security tracker to see if a newer patch is available.

How often does Samsung release security patches?+

Samsung releases monthly patches for flagship devices (Galaxy S and Z), quarterly patches for many mid-range devices (Galaxy A and M), and biannual patches for some older or entry-level devices. The frequency depends on Samsung's security policy for each model.

What does the security patch level date mean?+

The security patch level date (e.g. 2026-08-01) indicates the latest security bulletin your device has applied. A newer date means your device includes more recent security fixes and is better protected against known vulnerabilities.

Are security patches the same as Android updates?+

No. Security patches fix vulnerabilities without changing the major Android version. Android updates bring new platform features and a new Android version number. Both are delivered as firmware updates, but they serve different purposes.
