What Is Samsung Firmware?
Samsung firmware is the complete software package that runs on every Galaxy device. This guide explains what firmware is, what it includes, and how it relates to Android and One UI.
What Samsung firmware is
Samsung firmware is the complete software package that runs on a Samsung Galaxy device. It is not a single application or update — it is the entire operating system image installed on the device's internal storage. When you install a firmware update, you are replacing or modifying this entire software image.
The term "firmware" is sometimes used loosely to mean any software update, but in Samsung's context it refers specifically to the full system image that includes the Android operating system, Samsung's One UI interface, device drivers, carrier customisations, and security patches.
What Samsung firmware includes
A Samsung firmware package contains several distinct layers:
- Android operating system: The core Android platform including the Linux kernel, framework, and runtime.
- One UI: Samsung's custom user interface, system apps, and features built on top of Android.
- Security patches: Fixes for known vulnerabilities from the Android Security Bulletin and Samsung's own security bulletins.
- CSC (Consumer Software Customisation): Region and carrier-specific settings, apps, and branding defined by the CSC code.
- Device drivers: Software that enables the hardware components (chipset, display, camera, etc.) to function.
- Modem firmware: Software that controls the cellular radio and connectivity.
How firmware relates to Android and One UI
Android is the operating system foundation. One UI is Samsung's interface and application layer built on top of Android. Firmware is the complete package that includes both, plus all the other components listed above.
When Samsung releases a "One UI update," it is delivered as a firmware package that includes the new One UI version, potentially a new Android version, security patches, and other changes. The firmware build number identifies the specific version of this complete package.
How firmware is identified
Every firmware release is identified by a build number — an alphanumeric string like S928BXXU3CYGA1. This build number encodes the device model, region/CSC, firmware type, and a date-based version code. You can find your current build number in Settings > About phone > Software information.
How firmware updates are delivered
Samsung delivers firmware updates via two channels:
- OTA (Over-the-air): Updates pushed wirelessly to your device. See our OTA updates guide for details.
- Samsung Smart Switch: Updates installed via a USB connection to a PC or Mac.
Updates are rolled out in stages by CSC region and carrier, meaning the same device may receive an update at different times in different markets.
